Milestones tell more than just a distance; by the color of its head.
* National Highway: Milestone Yellow and White color.
* State Highway: Milestone Green and White color.
* City/District Road: Milestone Blue/Black and White color.
* Rural Road: Milestone Red and White color. Also referred as Pradhan-Mantri Gram Sadak.
It would be interesting to note that on undivided highways, both sides of a milestone are used to tell the distance to the nearest city. The highway number can be seen on the head of the milestone. On the side, one can see the sum of distances of two nearest cities in each direction from the milestone.</div>
